Short answer: anywhere from R2,000 to over R250,000, and the number on its own tells you almost nothing. What matters is what's actually being built, and who's building it.
The real South African price bands
Based on published pricing across dozens of South African studios and freelancers, the market roughly splits into four bands:
- R2,000 – R8,000: a template site, usually WordPress or a page builder, assembled rather than designed. Fine for a hobby or a placeholder, risky for anything you depend on for income.
- R8,000 – R20,000: the Cape Town average for a proper small-business brochure site sits around R11,500 for five pages. This is where most freelancers and small studios operate.
- R20,000 – R60,000: professional studio work, custom design, usually hand-coded or built properly on a platform rather than assembled from a theme.
- R60,000+: premium and corporate builds, multi-site systems, or anything with real custom functionality behind it.
Why two "five-page websites" can be 5x apart in price
The number rarely reflects page count. It reflects three things: whether the design is templated or original, whether the code is hand-written or plugin-assembled, and whether you own the result outright or you're renting a platform. A R6,000 site and a R38,000 site can look similar in a screenshot and be completely different products once you try to change something, or once Google starts grading page speed.
The part most quotes don't mention
A cheap build is rarely a one-time cost. Plugin licences renew annually, page builders slow down as they're extended, and "quick edits" often need the original developer, who may not still be reachable in a year. The real comparison isn't R8,000 vs R38,000, it's R8,000-plus-ongoing-fees-and-a-slow-site vs a fixed price with nothing recurring except hosting.
What actually changes your number
Three questions decide where you land: is it brochure or ecommerce, is the design custom or templated, and how many pages/products need real content written for them (not just placeholder text). Get honest answers to those three before you ask anyone for a quote, and you'll spot an inflated one immediately.
